Wankok Leong

Wankok Leong

http://www.1000tentacles.com

Wankok Leong

1

In this article,Wankok Leong takes us through the development of his”Skinnis” product, from sketches through to the final design.

Hi , I’m WanKok from Malaysla.I’m an illustrator and comic artist.Sketching is second nature to me and I sketch every day. either for work or for personal indulgence .For every project that I take on .I always start with a sketchbook. The idea behind it is to write down ideas, notes,do some thumbnails, rough sketches , layouts etc.I have found that it is a neat way to organise my thoughts and keep a record for each project – something like book-keeping!

A sketchbook is a very personal thing, and each artist has their own “style” of keeping one.My habit is to sketch in stages:1) Preliminary Sketches.2) Idea development and 3)Final Layout.

Let me show you the sketchbook that I created during one of my commercial projects, the”Skinnis” project.A brief overview of the project was to create a set of designs/illustrations for the use of the skinnis product, for a range of video game platforms ,laptops, skateboards and iPods, and also for T-shirts!

So here goes:

1>preliminary sketches

This is where I start letting the creative juice flow and go all out!A lot of different ideas get written down and are sketched out.You can see from these sketches that I was trying to find the right kind of direction and the overall “tone” for the project(Flg.01a – Flg.01f).

NOTES:

here I’m sketching down what I have in mind, just having some fun and “straying away” to do some inking(Flg.01lg-Flg.01l)

notes:

Slowly heading in the right direction (Flg.01-Flg.01l)

(Flg.01 – Flg.01l)

1>idea development

The nice thing about having a bound sketchbook is that you do not need to go through piles of papers to find that particular sketch (and as you know. we artists have loads of paper lying on our desks!)- you just flip the pages of a single book, and that’s it! This makes my life so much easier.(Flg.02a-Flg.02b)!

NOTES:

Idea is taking form, and so is the direction…(Flg.02c).

NOTES:

Layout ideas(Flg.o2d-Flg.02l)

NOTES:

Here I make some notes(Flg.02h).Translation for the notes:”Characters I like; characters’ backgrouds”.

NOTES:

I occasionally stray away from the project and start day dreaming a bit by doodling nonsense(Flg.02k).

NOTES:

More final designs taking place(Flg.02l).

3>FINAL DESIGN

Here I flip the sketchbook and get a feel for the overall design. I choose the most promising designs and work on them.

NOTES:

This sketch is very important(Flf.03a).If I lost it , then I would certainly feel”lost”. Through this image,I know how many final designs I need to do , and I can schedule my time according to the work load.

NOTES:

You can see how the ideas develop into a final design with these sketches.

NOTES:

Ideas for the final design(Flg.03f-Flg.03h). I don’t really like Flg.03g and go for Flg.03h instead!

附注: 在最后的设计理念(Flg.03f – Flg.03h)。我真的不喜欢Flg.03g和去Flg.03h 代替!

NOTES:

I call this image”Sweet Nectar”(Flg.03m)

(Flg.03m)

NOTES:

Some samples of the final designs (Flg.03n-Flg.03r).

附注: 最终设计的部分样本(Flg.03n – Flg.03r)。
